Why This Watch Matters

This time-only Rolex Precision in stainless steel was originally gifted to an employee of the Swiss Isola Workshops in 1950, after a tenure of 25 years.

The Full Story

It's fair to say that when one thinks of Rolex, a time-only “Calatrava”-style watch doesn't immediately spring to mind. That's not quite fair, however, as Rolex has produced a countless number of styles over the years besides its classic sports models. One thing this watch, a Precision from 1946, does have in common with those highly sought-after sports models is that it's made of stainless steel. It also has a number of interesting details like a non-lume dial and hands, and sunken hour markers, all giving it a similar appearance to the legendary Rolex ref. 8171. The case is flat with long curved lugs, granting it solid presence on the wrist. 

The condition of this example is very nice. The caseback retains its crown engraving and serial number, which are typically the first to go when these watches are polished for the first time. This watch also features a German engraving on the caseback that states it was gifted to the original owner from his employer on June 30, 1950, after 25 years of service. Rolex Precision models in steel are highly prized for their beauty and rarity.

What we Love and What You Should Know

This Precision is in great condition. The case is strong and appears to be unpolished. The crown and serial number on the caseback are clearly visible. The case has scratches. The caseback and edges of the case show some minor signs of pitting, which is commonly seen on these Precision models in steel. The caseback is engraved in German, "HERRN BORER MAX ANERKENNUNG FÜR 25 JÄHRIGE TREUE MITARBEIT 30.JUNI 1950 SCHWEIZERISCHE ISOLA-WERKE." This translates to, "To Borer Max In Recognition Of 25 Years Of Loyal Collaboration June 30, 1950, From The Swiss Isola Workshops." The dial is in nice, attractive condition and has developed some patina around the outer minute track and center. There are a couple light spots on the dial. The edge of the dial shows some wear.
